Morven, NC is a small, historic town in Anson County, North Carolina. Covering about one square mile and home to just over 500 residents, it is the kind of place many people pass through without noticing. But on August 30, Morven took center stage. Anson County natives and professional models Brenda Richardson and Dr. Latasha Watts brought high fashion to the county and sent it down the runway. With more than 40 models, 10 designers, and as many volunteers, they turned on the runway lights—and the community showed up.

The show took place in the heart of Morven at 229 East Main Street, home to the local community center HOLLA! Founded in 2005 by resident and philanthropist Leon Gatewood. HOLLA is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that offers youth programs focused on education, literacy, and fitness. They have faithfully served the people of Anson County for over 25 years and are recognized as a central pillar in the community.  All proceeds from the event went directly to HOLLA.

This was more than a charity event—it was high fashion and creativity at their finest. The diverse lineup included award-winning contemporary designer Poppy Gillett, who showcased pieces from her latest collection. Anson County native Roberta White debuted her handcrafted, southern charmed hat collection. Micah Patton was triumphant in bringing streetwear to life with bold colors, textures, and patterns that felt free-flowing yet meticulously tailored. Gorgeously Divine Crochet by Sadé Boyd added a casual, stylish touch with crochet designs in a wide range of patterns and colors. And this is only to mention a few. Additionally a variety of musical and dance acts including Z4ne, Young Genesis with Dr. Watts, Telesha Hellig, dancer bsmooth and the great jazz sounds of the band JUS-TUS showed up to add an entirely new level of variety to the show.

There was no doubt that the models were the stars of the show.  Even the tremendous energy of the audience, could not eclipse the bold, purposeful presence the models carried down the runway. Participants came from across the country to support the event, while seasoned models Latasha and Brenda helped nine first-time local models step confidently into the spotlight and own the night.

Bringing together models, designers, hairstylists, makeup artists, and volunteers is no small task—and doing it so far off the beaten path makes it even more challenging. Still, Dr. Watts and Brenda were guided by a clear mission: to give back to the community that supported them and helped shape their journey into successful, exceptional adults. Their hard work drew more than 22 sponsors from across the country, filled the venue, and brought the community together once again to invest in one another and the next generation.  At the end of the day………all the complexities of putting together a show like this were a result of one truly simple notion.  When asked why they took on this task…………..the answer was easy……..   “It was time to bring fashion to Anson County.”  Surely the did!
